Love Lies and Deception Blog Stop

What do you do when the one person you thought you knew turns out to be the one you knew the least?

Twenty-three year old Marissa Chase, and soon to be college graduate, has everything going for her: wonderful friends, a lucrative degree, and a chance to explore the world. What made it even better – or so she thought – was when her path crossed with the alluring Alec Holden. Unable to stay away from him, Marissa experiences a love like no other, and falls into his world of passion and intrigue. However, things begin to shift when this path takes a deadly turn.

Her trust is put to the test when hidden dangers unfold before her, revealing secrets that have been buried for years. Secrets that were meant to stay hidden. Murder, lies, and betrayal … will Marissa figure it all out in time and escape with her life intact, or will she be too late and fall into the trap of deception?

L.P. Dover has blown me away! I loved this book so much! Her writing is amazing and it sweeps you away and into the story like you are right there in the action. I lost count of how many times my heart skipped a beat while reading Love, Lies & Deception.
The title alone lets you know what you are getting yourself in to; lots of love, lies, and deception. We get so much more though. This book really had it all. Drama, suspense, comedy, romance, hot guys….well you get my point. It’s all in there, wrapped up with a pretty awesome cover!

You will LOVE Alec! What is there not to love about him? He is a hot, bad boy type with a dark and haunting past and, of course, dirty little secrets. His BIG secret wasn’t at all what I thought it would be. I was shocked!
You will never guess what is coming around the corner, but that didn’t stop me from trying to figure it out! I kept guessing and guessing, trying really hard, but I was soooooooooooooo wrong. I never could have guessed who the killer was, but I was right that a certain person was involved.

Excerpt

Kristian was leaning against the wall with his muscular arms crossed at his chest. His smoky gray eyes watched me intently as I made my way to him, and it made me nervous. I’d never seen him look at me like that, with such longing and need.

When I approached, he loosened his arms and pulled me straight into them, enveloping me in his scent of bodywash and cologne; he smelled completely different from Alec, like they had their own enticing scent. He was wearing the cologne I had given him for his birthday the year before, and it made me smile as I laid my head on his chest.

“Please don’t go, Marissa. I can take you somewhere and keep you safe. Why does it have to be him? If anything, it’s more dangerous since whoever is after you is only doing it because of him.”

In all honesty, he had a point, but I didn’t want to imagine not going with Alec. I held onto Kristian tighter and breathed him in. I was going to miss him so much.

“I have to go, Kristian,” I whispered. “And I have to go with Alec. I don’t want you or any of our friends being targets just because of me. If anything happened to any of you I would never forgive myself.”

Kristian let me go and placed both of his hands on my cheeks, lifting my face up. “I’m not going to know what to do without you, Mare. You’ve been such a huge part of my life for so long. Just please promise me that you’ll call me or text if you need anything.”

Smiling, I leaned into his hand and placed mine over the top of his. “Always,” I whispered wholeheartedly. A lone tear escaped out of the corner of my eye and Kristian wiped it away with his thumb.

A pained look crossed his face and my heart shattered for him. “Be safe, Marissa.”

“I will,” I said, slowly backing away from him. “But I have to go.”

As soon as I turned to leave, Kristian grabbed my arm and pulled me to him, crushing his lips against mine. They were firm yet soft, and the desire that flowed through them to me shot through my body like electricity. Kristian had never kissed me like that before, or ever for that matter. The kiss only lasted briefly because Alec came up behind me and tore me away from him, and stepped in front of me.

In a low, menacing voice Alec said, “If I ever see you touch her like that again I’m gonna rip off your arms and shove them up your ass. Be thankful I can’t do anything about it now, but when we come back you better watch out.”

Kristian met Alec head on. “I’d like to see you try,” he sneered.

Interview

What made you decide to start writing?

I began writing ever since I was a little girl. I think I wrote my first book when I was eight years old. It happened to be about four pages long … lol.  Anyway, I didn’t become serious about it until I started befriending some fellow authors. Their encouragement led me down the path of writing. I was clueless about how to publish a book and they helped and guided me.

Where do you get the inspiration for your stories and characters?

Everything inspires me!! I know this is strange, but the weather inspires me. My fae series deals with the seasons and I made sure to write them during those times in the book. I wrote Forever Fae in the fall and in the book it dealt with the Fall court, and so forth. Other things such as music, art, movies, other books, and just life in general inspire me.

What is your writing process like?

I love to write in my favorite recliner. For some reason, I can’t think anywhere else in the house except in my favorite chair. I usually do a lot of my writing at night when my kids are in bed.

Which character of yours is your favorite and why?

This is seriously a hard question!! They’re all my favorites!!! I love each and every one of them and they all hold a special place in my heart.

Do you have a specific writing style?

I really love writing in first person. I tried doing the whole third person thing, but I just couldn’t get into it. I’m just more comfortable with first.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Hmm … not really. (LOL) I know that sounds bad, but I don’t really have a message in it. If anything, it would be trust, to learn to trust your instincts.

Who are your favorite authors?

Oh goodness there are so many!!! If I had to pinpoint them I would have to say Jeaniene Frost, Sylvia Day, Quinn Loftis, Shelly Crane, Terry Spear, and Laurell K. Hamilton.

What books have most influenced your life most?

Definitely, Quinn Loftis’ books. She was the first indie author I ever read so reading her stories it gave me the courage the start my own dream.

What book are you reading now?

I just got through reading Real by Katy Evans. Loved it!!

Who designs your book covers?

Regina Wamba with Mae I Design has designed all of my cover so far.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

The hardest parts are remembering every single detail. I have to write them all down in a notebook before I get started. Take for instance, eye and hair colors and so forth. I do a whole character biography before I start writing a book so I can have them completely in depth in my mind before I start.

What was your favorite part of your book(s)?

To be honest, I think the favorite part of ALL my books would be the ending to Summer of Frost. It was the most heartfelt scene I wrote and I know it meant a lot to my readers to be able to join in with what I did there.

Is there anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?

Yeah, there are several instances where I guess come from my own life. If you notice, my main characters love Italian food. Italian food is my favorite so I guess they adopted that from me. My novel, Love’s Second Chance, is more about my life story. Not every single thing about the book is true, but it was a version of how I met my husband. If you notice in the book, Korinne and Galen’s first date was at the race track … it was mine and my husband’s too. For Love, Lies, and Deception, I put the setting in Boone, NC. My characters attend ASU which is where I went to college. I know the area well up there so it was easy to have it come alive in my book.

How do you come up with the titles for your books?

I just take the story line and condense it into a couple of words. I have to say, naming the title is one of the hardest parts for me.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I like to read, of course.

If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

I would have to say my grandmother. I miss her so much and I would do anything to be able to see her again just once.

Do you have any upcoming projects?

Oh definitely, there are so many ideas in my head it’s crazy. I’m currently working on my 2nd Second Chances book at the moment. But I have a whole new series planned out for next year that I can’t wait to get started on.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

That I love you all dearly and that I love your support. It warms my heart when I receive messages about someone has loved my books. It really means a lot to me and there’s no way I can ever say ‘Thank You’ enough. Readers are my rock stars!!

Silenced Series Blog Stop

Welcome to the fifth day of the Silenced Series blog tour.  First we are going to start of with an excerpt of Silenced: The Overtaking. This is from Chapter Eleven. Enjoy.

****

Excerpt- Chapter 11

The house looks too familiar. As I turn the corner, I see someone lying on the floor. Without delay I realize it’s Sarah. It’s hard for me to see, but there are several things in the room which stand out. I see a white book shelf, which matches the other furniture in the room. On the shelves, the scrapbooks stick out.
I realize everything in this room is black and white, except for the scrapbook. They are the only things in the room that has color.
I run to the closet and the same boxes I moved earlier are in color too. I bend down to move the boxes. I move the small piece of the wall that hides Sarah’s cutting tools. The tools aren’t there but there’s a piece of paper; I pull it out. Opening it up, I see there are words written on it. Once it was fully unwrapped, I can read it:
Dear Amber,
I want to thank you so much for all you’ve done to help my mom and dad through my death. I know this is really hard for you to do, but I know deep down inside you can handle it.  I want to thank you for removing my “tools” before Mom found them. Please don’t worry about me. I’m a lot better now than I was my entire time on earth. Heaven is exactly how I pictured it to be and more. I’m at peace now, and I couldn’t be happier. I love you Amber, and I always will.
Your Best Friend, Sarah
I fold up the note and slip it into my pocket. In an odd way, this sends love and comfort through my body. I replace everything in the closet, I return to the room to find Sarah’s body isn’t lying there anymore.
I decide to toddle down to the family room to discover what else I can find. When I enter the room, I don’t see anything out of the ordinary. Everything’s in place. I walk over to a picture of Sarah from her sixteenth birthday. Her dress was made for this party and especially for her. Allen made sure she felt like a princess. She liked the pink, girly girl look at this time. Well, we both did. This is when we tried changing our look to fit in and see if that made a difference in how the girls treated us. Needless to say, it didn’t.
Just as I turn around, the TV comes on and it’s loud. I can’t even hear myself think. I jump when I see what’s on. It’s the tape Allen and Donna made for Sarah for her third birthday and mine too. We shared our party. As I watch the tape, I notice the same guy that was in the picture, is on this tape too. Who in the hell is he?
We have the same outfits, ate the same cake, and got pretty much the same gifts. This was the party that tied us together. This was the time everyone said we would grow to be sisters, and we did.
“Amber...”
I hear a gentle and calming voice coming from the doorway. I turn to see Sarah standing there. I don’t know how to react; I just stand there. I’m not sure if I should talk to her or if it’s just my mind messing with me. A few moments go by and I decide I need to talk to her.
“Sarah.” I say wearily.
“Please don’t feel bad for me.” Sarah starts to say.  “I’m happier now. I don’t feel the pain or darkness anymore. This was for the best.”
“Before you go on, answer me a few questions. Why? What happened? What went wrong?” I ask her.
“I fell into a deep depression when you moved. I tried calling you several times, but hung up before the phone connected. I didn’t want to seem like I was bothering you.”
“Sarah, you could never do that! We are sisters.”
“I didn’t do it on purpose. It just kind of happened. I was trying to take away my really bad headache. The bottle I got them from didn’t say how many to take. I started with one, and it didn’t do anything. I took another, still the same thing. The third, and then the fourth. After I took the fourth, my body seemed to take control all on its own. The next thing I knew, well… here I am. I wasn’t trying to kill myself. I just wanted my headache to go away. Don’t feel bad for me. I am free.”
“It’s good to know the truth. I miss you. We all do. And…” I begin to say, but Sarah cuts me off.
“I don’t have much time. I want you to know that Landon is good. He will be your husband one day. You may not believe me but just watch. Tell Patrick that Stacey is a good girl. Amber, she’s going through the same thing we did. She needs you. Don’t let him push her away. Casey will be fine. She’ll move on. Hopefully, we can talk again soon. I’m sorry, but I have to go now. Love you bunches lil sis!”
That was it; she disappeared. I fell to the floor sobbing. I cry harder than I ever have. My hands start shaking. I don’t want her to go. I want her to stay. I want her to live!

The Silenced Series gives us a good look into the mind of a cutter. Having dealt with depression also, I can connect with Amber on some levels. Throughout the series, Amber has to face some pretty hard obstacles that fall into her path. Just when you think you have her figured out, she surprises you. It is pretty interesting to follow along with Amber and watch her grow into a mature young woman.

Finding Home Cover Reveal

1013-Finding-Home_1400

Synopsis:

Moody, atmospheric, and just a little bit punk, Finding Home takes contemporary YA to a new level of grit...

When Amy’s mum dies, the last thing she expects is to be kicked off her dad’s music tour all the way to her Aunt Lou in a depressing hole of a seaside town. But it’s okay — Amy learned how to cope with the best, and soon finds a hard-drinking, party-loving crowd to help ease the pain.

The only solace is her music class, but even there she can’t seem to keep it together, sabotaging her grade and her one chance at a meaningful relationship. It takes a hard truth from her only friend before Amy realises that she has to come to terms with her past, before she destroys her future.

Finding Home, Lauren K McKellar's debut novel, is coming October 1, 2013. Add it to goodreads today.

Excerpt:

‘Look, I have to go. Can we talk about this later?’ Dad was asking Mum. Joe had shut the door behind him, and it was a good thing he did too, because when Dad had finished speaking, Mum picked up an empty bottle of Grey Goose vodka and threw it at his head. She missed, missed by a mile, but that didn’t stop the bottle hitting the wall behind him and shattering into thousands of tiny pieces.

‘Jesus!’ Dad exclaimed. He turned around, surveying the damage.

‘Oh, look what I did! Can’t have clean-cut Stevie D trashing the green room. People might talk!’ Mum’s voice dripped with sarcasm. It sounded hoarse, no doubt a result of the hours she’d spent alternating between crying and screaming up until now.

‘Even if this was our bloody lounge room, I would still be furious! You can’t just throw s**t like that.’

‘I’ll throw whatever I want to throw!’ Mum yelled. ‘You’re so uptight.’ She walked up to Dad and put her hands on his shoulders, shaking them. ‘Give up this stupid dream already.’

‘And do what? I can’t afford your habits any other way. If I don’t sing, you have to get a job.’ Dad shook his head.

I inched around behind them and started to pick up the pieces of glass. They were all different sizes, and some had gotten stuck in the carpet. They required a bit of twisting to retrieve, but the others I could pick up with ease and place in my hand.

‘What do you want me to do? I don’t have any skills. And there’s clearly only one thing you think I’m good at these days,’ Mum said, leering. She pulled at her top, exposing her décolletage.

I focused on the glass again. I counted each piece in my hand. Thirty-six, thirty-seven, thirty-eight. On the fortieth piece, a shard broke through my skin, spilling bright red blood. Funny. I hadn’t thought my skin would be so thin.

‘Amy, you’re hurt!’ Mum pushed past Dad and came to kneel next to me. ‘What are you doing?’ She knocked my hand with her own, and the pieces of glass flew up into the air and landed back on the floor.

All my efforts — ruined.

‘Let me see,’ Dad said.

‘Get the hell away from her!’ Mum yelled, raising her voice again.

‘Do we have to do this in front of Amy?’ Dad asked. I felt them turn to look at me. Did they think I hadn’t heard? That the fights they’d been having all day in the adjacent hotel room hadn’t resonated with a hatred that travelled through walls?

‘Please don’t,’ was all I could say. But it was enough. Dad left the room, and Mum tended to my hand, spilling some vodka to cleanse it before wrapping it in a spare t-shirt.

‘I’m sorry, baby,’ Mum whispered to me. ‘I promise, things are going to get better.’

Only they didn’t. They got much, much worse.
